Spousal maintenance or alimony, as its known in the USA, is the obligation partners have to financially maintain one another despite separating.

Spousal maintenance may be applicable where a former partner is unable to financially support themselves due to having the care of children, their health, being out of the work force or other circumstances.

Spousal maintenance can be paid on a week to week basis or as part of your final property settlement.
